Thalassotherapia Opatija provides physical therapy to patients after spinal surgery (hernia disci) or operations on the joints, after installing endoprostheses, conditions after fractures of the spine and bones, sports injuries, neurological diseases in mobile patients (conditions after cerebral insult), damage to peripheral nerves and other conditions that require therapy.

Besides outpatients, Thalassotherapia Opatija accepts inpatients accommodated in the hospital or hotel part of 'Villa Dubrava' insured by the Croatian Health Insurance Fund or private users.

Thalassotherapia Opatija has provided physical and rehabilitation medicine services since its establishment. Successes in physical medicine and rehabilitation were the foundations of the development and recognition of today's Thalassotherapia.

Today, Thalassotherapia provides various diagnostic and therapeutic services in physical medicine and rehabilitation based on international scientific evidence and knowledge, an interdisciplinary, multimodal and personalised approach.

Specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation - physiatrists treat diseases and disorders of the musculoskeletal system with an interdisciplinary approach in their outpatient clinics, which includes:

·         An exhaustive anamnesis,

·         Clinical examination and specific provocation tests,

·         ultrasound imaging of the musculoskeletal system,

·         electromyoneurography,

·         isokinetic evaluation,

·         skeletal densitometry,

·         stabilometry and detailed questionnaires performed by physiatrists in our institution.

Thalassotherapia provides extended laboratory tests and modern radiological imaging methods of the musculoskeletal system (for some of the services, we cooperate with other institutions).

The physiatry patient is provided with multimodal treatment. It includes pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment. After the examination, the physiatrist may prescribe an effective medication or apply an intraarticular infiltration into the affected joint. Non-pharmacological treatment primarily focuses on education, prevention, kinesitherapy, and orthopaedic appliances.

The current trend of comprehensive rehabilitation is also reflected in our outpatient work. For example, we treat patients with various pain syndromes (such as low back pain and knee pain), movement disorders, neurological disorders, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, obesity, etc.

During inpatient rehabilitation, rehabilitation of orthopaedic-traumatological patients, after spine surgery, rheumatological patients, rehabilitation of sports injuries and certain neurological disorders are most often carried out.

Diagnostic possibilities

• A specialist examination by a physiatrist - an anamnesis and a physical examination of the locomotor system, and a final opinion with the establishment of a diagnosis and the adoption of a treatment plan.

• The imaging methods used in physiatry diagnostics are: ultrasound of the locomotor system (US), X-ray (X-ray), computer tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR) and densitometry

• Electromyoneurography (EMNG) is used when damage or disease of muscles and peripheral nerves is suspected

• Isokinetic diagnostics on the 'Cybex CSMI' device detect the imbalance of individual muscle groups, leading to locomotor disorders.
