Thalassotherapia Opatija is the headquarters of the Department of Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka.

The establishment of the postgraduate specialist study in sports and rehabilitation medicine is the response of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka to the current demands and needs of modern sports and contemporary trends in sports medicine and rehabilitation.

The organisation of the Specialist Studio is based on a visionary conception of the development of sports activities, which implies a foundation on knowledge, a multidisciplinary approach, the use of modern technologies, and good organisation and high expertise of the actors involved - all of which require professional and scientific development support.

The requirements and needs of modern sports include much more than classic training and coaching knowledge.

Sports and rehabilitation medicine are crucial to success in sports and the development progress of sports activities.

Modern trends in sports medicine and rehabilitation, training, preparation and nutrition of the athletes, organisation and management of sports, coaches' work, sports teachers, sports recreation managers, etc., must be taken into account. There is currently a lot of room for further education and training of personnel whose education, knowledge and skills should follow the current needs of modern sports.

The postgraduate specialist study in sports and rehabilitation medicine at the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka is a multidisciplinary, cohesive program. It presents knowledge from various fields of science: biomedicine and healthcare, natural sciences, humanities and social studies, interdisciplinary sciences, basic and clinical medical sciences, chemistry, biology, kinesiology, public health, psychology, food technology, philosophy and management. Students can improve their knowledge in sports and rehabilitation medicine and become part of a community that changes the future of sports.
